On 29th November 2025, our Silverback students from both classes took part in their grading. The assessments were conducted by Grand Master Dennis (9th Dan), with valuable support from Mr Hussain (2nd Dan), and Mr N Uddin (2nd Dan).
A huge well done to all our students for their dedication, hard work, and fantastic achievements!

Grading was assessed by GM Denis (9th Dan) and Mr. N. Uddin (2nd Dan), with theory assessed by Mr. Hussain (2nd Dan).
Grading in Taekwondo typically takes place every 3 to 6 months, depending on belt level.
Silverback taekwondo have Mini Gradings every 3 months for students from White Belt to Green Tag, focusing on building solid fundamentals.
Mini Gradings (White Belt to Green Tag)
- Frequency: Every 3 months
- These are for beginner-level students.
- Focus is on building strong fundamentals, discipline, and confidence.
Main Gradings (Green Belt and above, up to Black Belt)
- Frequency: Every 6 months
- These gradings become more advanced with stricter technical and performance expectations.
Taekwondo gradings are the tests or assessments that students take to move up through the ranks (or “belts”) in the martial art of Taekwondo. Each grading evaluates a student’s progress in terms of skill, knowledge, and physical ability.
Here’s a breakdown:
Belt System
- Students start as white belts and work their way up through various coloured belts (e.g., yellow, green, blue, red), each with different levels (often called “kup” grades).
- After completing all the coloured belts, they test for black belt (dan) ranks, which have their own levels too (1st dan, 2nd dan, and so on).
What’s Tested in a Grading?
Depending on the level, a grading usually includes:
- Patterns (Tul): Pre-set forms or sequences of movements.
- Kicks & Techniques: Showing clean and powerful execution of strikes and blocks.
- Free Sparring (Jawo Matsogi): Controlled fighting with a partner.
- Self-Defence: Techniques for dealing with grabs or attacks.
- Breaking (optional at some levels): Breaking boards with kicks or punches.
- Theory: At each Students will be asked about Taekwondo terms, history, or meanings behind patterns.
Why Do Gradings Matter?
- They give you goals to work toward.
- They show your progress and dedication.
- They’re required to advance and eventually earn a black belt.
Each Taekwondo school or association might have slightly different grading requirements, but the general process is the same.
